Section News
- The Spring 2024 Meeting of the MD-DC-VA section of the MAA
will be held at James Madison University on April 26-27, 2024. Several of the hotel group rates have expired, but there is a new one that is good until March 26.
On Friday, Heather Russell of the University of Richmond will run a workshop Promoting community, confidence, and creativity in the classroom, and Hortensia, MAA President, and professor at Colorado State University will
give the banquet address, Compassion in & Access to Learning Mathematics (CALM).
The Saturday morning address,
Ada Lovelace: The Making of a Computer Scientist, will be given by Adrian Rice of Randolph Macon College, and the Saturday afternoon address, A Neural Network Approximation of the Proximal Operator of the L-infinity Norm will be given by Kathryn Linehan of the University of Virginia.

- There is sad news to report. Longtime member of the section Edwin O'Shea of James Madison University passed away on September 26th. See here for a beautifully written obituary.
- Fall meeting highlights – The Fall meeting of the MD-DC-VA section of the MAA
was held at Stevenson University on October 13-14, 2023.
- Congratulations to Brian Heinold of Mount St. Mary's University, 2023 winner of the
Sister Helen Christensen Service Award!
- Congratulations to Jennifer Bergner of Salisbury University, 2023 winner of the John M. Smith Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching!
