Static Operational Plan for Governor

Bylaws description

According to our section's Bylaws, the Governor is a member of the Executive Committee (ex-officio) but has no specific tasks itemized in the Bylaws.

Time line for tasks

Today is Friday, 21 August 2015. This timeline assumes that the next meeting is scheduled to be on 2 October 2015 and the last meeting was on 24 October 2014. (Note that next meeting date may not be yet set and the default date of 1 Oct is being used.) If you are on the executive committee and you are reviewing the operational plan for your office, you may interested in editing/modifying what you see here.

  1. Summer - Attend MathFest [Target date: August]
    1. The Board of Governor's Meeting is the day before MathFest and lasts all day. The agenda for the Board of Governor's Meeting is sent out slightly more than a month before a meeting. The board meeting consists mostly of reports from the staff of MAA, a few action items, and an executive session to vote on prizes and other forms of recognition. The board must approve all by-law changes for sections. The board approves the budget of the Association. This board meeting often hears the results of the audit of the operations of the Association.
    2. The Governor will often attend the Section Officer meeting during MathFest along with another member of the executive committee.
  2. September [Target date: September]
    1. Write a report for the Fall Newsletter on the Board of Governor's Meeting and other issues affecting the Association.
  3. Section meeting [Target date: 2 October 2015]
    1. Present an oral report at the section business meeting on the activities of the Association and other information of interest to section members. This report usually reviews the written report in the most recent newsletter.
    2. Attend the executive committee meeting at the section meeting
  4. January: Attend Joint Meetings [Target date: January]
    1. Attend the Board of Governor's Meeting the day before the meetings. Dues for the association are determined at this meeting. See the details for the MathFest meeting for other details of this meeting.
    2. Possibly attend the Section Officer Meeting during the meetings.
  5. February [Target date: February]
    1. Write a report for the Spring Newsletter on the Board of Governor's Meeting and other issues affecting the Association.
  6. Various times of the year [Target date: 2 October 2015]
    1. Vote by e-mail on items sent by the Association's Secretary. These often involve awards/speakers voted on by the board.
    2. Every 5 years name a committee to select the Iowa Section's Meritorious Service Award. The next time the section is eligible to do this is the spring of 2016. [update as needed]
    3. Remind the section that every 5 years it is eligible to invite a Polya lecturer. The next time the section is eligible to invite a lecturer is 2018-2019. [update as needed]
    4. Serve on committees of the MAA. Duties vary by committee.
