(Approved) Business Meeting Minutes 2013

Business meeting
Saturday, October 19, 2013

Chairman Russell Goodman called the meeting to order at 10:18am.

• Russ Goodman welcomed the new participants at the meeting, introduced the Vice-Chair Elect candidates, and introduced the representative from the MAA, Second Vice-President Jennifer Quinn.
• Ballots were distributed for the Vice-Chair Elect position, and Amanda Matsen was elected.
• Minutes of the October 6, 2012 business meeting were approved as printed.
• Russell Goodman presented the 2013 MAA Iowa Section Award to Theron James "TJ" Hitchman of UNI.
• Ruth Berger presented the Iowa Mathematics Competition trophy to the "Units" team from Iowa State University and announced the 20th annual Iowa math competition to be held at UNI at a date to be determined in March.
• Russ Goodman gave a report from MathFest Section Officers' Meeting.
• Scott Searcy gave the treasurer's report.
• Al Hibbard gave the Governor's report.
• The following amendments to the Iowa Section Bylaws were brought to the floor by Russ Goodman.
  • Insert a new Section 7 into Article III (renumbering the subsequent sections accordingly) to have Article III, Section 7 read

    Section 7. The Executive Committee will provide a Section representative to section officer meetings at MathFest and the Joint Meetings. One of the Chair, Vice-Chair, or Vice-Chair Elect should serve as the Section representative. If none of those officers are able to serve as Section representative, the Executive Committee will designate a Section representative.

    This passed unanimously.
  • Insert a new Section 2 into Article V (renumbering the subsequent section accordingly) to have Article V, Section 2 read

    Section 2. The Section will use funds to support representation (as described in Article III, Section 7) at section officer meetings at MathFest and the Joint Meetings.

    This passed unanimously.
• Jonas Meyer gave the report from Iowa-NExT.
• Deb Czarneski gave the Report from Midwest Undergraduate Mathematics Symposium. April 12, 2014 is the date for the next MUMS.
• MAA representative Jennifer Quinn was called on for remarks. She gave a tour of the new MAA Website, and emphasized, "Renew your membership."
• Governor Al Hibbard reported on the Spring 2013 Combined Meeting in Missouri.
• Brian Birgen listed lunch details.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:20 p.m.
