The invited speaker at this year's MAA-Iowa section meeting will be Dr. David Stone from Georgia Southern University. His talk on Friday evening is entitled "Math Problems - The Eternal Lure", and his talk on Saturday morning is entitled "Counting on Lotteries".
As reported in Focus,Dec. 2001, the MAA has been awarded a grant by NSF for a 3-year project, entitled "Supporting Assessment in Undergraduate Mathematics" (SAUM). The NSF reported that mathematics is ahead among the sciences in its concern for assessment. The SAUM project will include a workshop series, a volume of new case studies, and the creation of a web site for further information. The grant is founded on the creation of a study in 1995 by the Assessment sub-committee of the CUPM which developed into the book of case studies edited by Gold, Keith and Marion : "Assessment Practices in Undergraduate Mathematics."
A significant charge of SAUM is to bring assessment to discussion at MAA section meetings. On Saturday, April 6, the Iowa Section will host an assessment workshop from 9:45am to 11:00am led by Sandy Keith. After a short presentation from Sandy and some faculty from Iowa, a discussion among the participants will follow, regarding successful assessment strategies as well as areas of concern. Topics at the lower levels might include developmental courses, placement tests, advising, calculus reform, on-line learning, general-education mathematics, or the use of technology in the classroom; while topics involving upper-level students could include capstone courses, comprehensive exams, or student research projects. Since the range of topics is so enormous, we need your help and participation in advance to find what you would like to focus on. If you would like to participate in any way, or if you have any questions, please contact Sandy directly (szkeith@stcloudstate.edu) as soon as possible.
