Awards for Teaching and Service

The Texas Section has three awards each year: the Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics Award, the Distinguished Service Award, and the Ron Barnes Distinguished Service to Students Award. The recipients will be honored at the banquet of the spring meeting. Nominations for all three of these awards are due on November 15 of the fall preceding the spring meeting where the awards will be presented. Decisions will be made by December 15, with formal announcement of winners by January 15. Below are the details of each award, past recipients, and nomination procedures.

Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics

The selection committee for this award will be composed of the four elected directors with the Director-At-Large serving as chair. After the annual deadline, the committee will assess the pool of nominees with the goal of choosing one well-qualified recipient for the Texas Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. The recipient would then be eligible to become the Section nominee to the pool from which the national recipients of the MAA Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics will be selected. (One of the national winners may be selected from another source.) There will be at most three national recipients, each of whom will be honored at the national MAA meeting and receive a $1,000 check and a certificate.

Guidelines for Nomination

Anyone is entitled to make a nomination. It is encouraged (but not required) for the nomination or one of the nomination statements to come from a department leader (e.g., department chair, associate chair, assistant chair, graduate or undergraduate director, dean) in the mathematical sciences who has responsibilities of faculty evaluation, or who has a good knowledge of teaching of all faculty in the department. Self-nomination is not permitted. A previous nominee for this award who did not become a section awardee may be nominated again.

* "Teaching" is to be interpreted in its broadest sense, not necessarily limited to classroom teaching. It may include activities such as preparing students for mathematical competitions such as the Putnam Prize Competition or the Mathematical Contest in Modeling, or attracting students to major in a mathematical science or to pursue a graduate degree.

** "Influence beyond their own classrooms" can take many forms, including but not limited to professional development and mentoring of colleagues, demonstrated lasting impact on alumni, influence on the profession through curricular revisions in college mathematics teaching with national impact, or influential innovative books on the teaching of college mathematics.

Documentation

Nominations must be submitted using our nomination form no later than November 15. The nomination packet should include:

The nomination form should be submitted by the person making the nomination, but other colleagues of the nominee may write the statements about the nominee’s classroom teaching and teaching-related activities. The nominator is responsible for submitting all of these documents in one transmission.

Nominations for someone from another Section should be sent to the Secretary of the nominee's Section.

Haimo Award

The chair of the selection committee will communicate with the award recipient and their department leader to determine if the recipient would also like to be considered for the national Haimo Award. If the recipient of the Texas Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics is nominated for the Haimo Award, the chair of the selection committee and the Section Secretary will coordinate with the nominee to assemble and submit the nomination materials.

We appreciate your help in this effort to honor extraordinarily successful teaching. The MAA and the Texas Section wish to see such teaching recognized at all types of postsecondary institutions. Please nominate a deserving individual from your institution.
