Hotels, Registration, and Parking

Registration and Abstract Submission

Abstract submission is now closed. If you still wish to register for the conference please contact Theresa Martines.

Conference Hotel

Best Western Plus Austin Central, 919 E Koenig, Austin TX

To register, call 512.454.1144 or book online using your preferred travel booking web site. Parking, breakfast and WiFi are included at the hotel.

The initial registration deadline was September 28, 2022. Students who registered before this deadline will be provided rooms (booked and paid for) by the conference. Students who register after September 28, as well as faculty, will need to make their own hotel arrangements.

Receipts for registration costs will be available at the registration table Friday night and Saturday morning.

Parking

The hotel is just over three miles away from the conference building. Parking on or near the UT Austin campus for the event is available for a fee. Although street parking is free and some lots are open to anyone on the weekends, spots are not always available. A recommended option is to use the on-campus parking garages. Locations and costs for these garages can be found on this map. Speedway (SWG) and 27th Street (TSG) are the closest garages to the Math building (PMA). Parking meters for short-term street parking (up to 2 hours) are available; more information can be found at this site.

(UPDATE) For those planning to use the parking garages: when you pull into these garages you will be given a paper ticket. Bring this ticket with you to the registration table and the conference will exchange it for a pre-paid card at no cost to you. These pre-paid cards will be available Friday night and Saturday until they run out, so please exchange your paper ticket right when you arrive for the day!

Invited Speakers

Our invited speakers are Dr. Alicia Prieto-Langarica, Associate Director of Project NExT, Associate Editor of La Matematica, and Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and Director of Academic Programs at the Sokolov Honors College at Youngstown State University, and Dr. Samuel Ivy, Student Activities Director for the Texas Section of the MAA and Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor.

Bio

Dr. Alicia Prieto-Langarica is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Youngstown State University and the Director for Academic Programs at the Sokolov Honors College also at Youngstown State University. She received her Undergraduate degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2008 and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2012. Dr. Prieto-Langarica’s research is in the intersection of mathematics and biology, specifically problems related to the medical field. Recently she started conducting research in data science, mathematics education, and public policy. Dr. Prieto-Langarica has been recognized with awards such as the Herny L. Alder Award for Distinguished Teaching from the Mathematical Association of America in 2019. She was also among the 3 MVPs at the Mahoning Valley Young Professionals 25 under 35 Award in 2017 and was a finalist for the Athena Award in 2019.

Bio

Dr. Samuel Ivy is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, TX. He is a proud alumnus of Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA where he received his Bachelors degree in Mathematics. He later earned his Masters and Ph.D in Mathematics from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. As a native of Memphis, TN, Dr. Ivy has always possessed a passion in promoting STEM interest among historically underrepresented and underserved groups. After graduate school, he served as the Director for the Center for Leadership and Diversity in STEM at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. This allowed him to facilitate STEM workshops to middle and high school students nationally, and internationally, while mentoring undergraduates interested in STEM pathways. For this work, Dr. Ivy was recognized as a 2019 Modern-Day Technology Leader by the Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) STEM Global Competitiveness Conference. In addition to being spotlighted in several news articles promoting STEM, he was proud to be featured on the website Mathematically Gifted & Black. Dr. Ivy enjoys teaching, mentoring, and working with undergraduates. He currently serves at the Student Activities Director for the MAA Texas Section Executive Committee. His research interests include the promotion of the diversity in STEM, Lie Theory and Symmetric spaces.
