Proposed 2004 Section Meeting
in Anchorage, Alaska

The University of Alaska Anchorage has submitted their campus as a candidate host site for the annual Pacific Northwest Section meeting in the summer of 2004. The proposal was discussed at the section business meeting last spring, and a motion was passed to solicit the opinion of the section membership prior to making a final decision on the proposal. The Executive Committee invites you to submit your thoughts about holding a section meeting in Alaska.  Please take a few minutes right now to fill out the online survey form.

As a part of their proposal, UAA has offered to provide campus housing at a very low cost. This would provide an excellent opportunity to visit Alaska and explore its natural beauty with very inexpensive lodging during the height of the tourist season. It is expected that many of those attending the meeting will extend their visit to Alaska for touring, and UAA plans to assist members with tour arrangements. In fact, if enough members request tours, they can arrange for groups trips to many of the wonderful summer locales around the state.

Downtown Anchorage

The drawbacks of having a meeting in Alaska are obvious: The bulk of our membership is far away from Alaska, which could make attending such a meeting prohibitively expensive. As a result, our attendance at the meeting might be much lower than usual. In addition, it would be impossible for most students to attend the meeting.

On the other hand, because of the unique location, it is possible that we will attract many members to this meeting who might otherwise not attend a section meeting. We would also plan to advertise the meeting in newsletters of other MAA sections in hopes that the location might attract members from other sections to the meeting as well.

Our section includes all or part of the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington as well as the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Northwest Territories. Regardless of the location of our section meeting, attendance at section meetings is always a challenge for many of our members (particularly those in Alaska) because of the vast size of the section. In fact, 18 of our last 20 meetings have been held in Washington, Oregon, or Vancouver, BC. The other two were in Idaho and Montana. We have never held a section meeting in Alaska. This would provide a wonderful opportunity for our Alaska members to attend a section meeting.

We would like to extend our thanks to the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Alaska Anchorage for their excellent work in putting together a proposal for this meeting. They have done an wonderful job of putting together this proposal and laying the groundwork for a very successful meeting far in advance of the actual meeting date. We are deeply appreciative of the effort involved.

Please fill out the online survey about the possibility of an Alaska meeting as soon as possible!
