Dear Michigan AMC Winners,
Congratulations for your superb performance in the AMC competitions during the academic years 2003-2005!
To celebrate your outstanding achievements, you, your parents,
and your teachers are cordially invited to the MAA-Michigan Awards Ceremony in recognition of the AMC winners, with presentation by Brian Conrad, Professor of Mathematics, University of Michigan.
The ceremony will start with refreshments, followed by a short presentation by Professor Conrad. You will then be recognized by your teacher and accept your award from the professor.
Professor Conrad, the supervisor of two Michigan top-40 finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search in the last three years, will talk about conics and how the Greeks studied them for purely intellectual reasons, without any awareness of the role conics would later play in modeling orbits for planets, comets, etc.
In general, rather esoteric mathematics created solely for intellectual curiosity tends to eventually find its way into fundamental applications.
The ceremony will be held in Ann Arbor on Monday, September 12, from 6 to 8 P.M.
Please refer to the program (in the greenish window on the right) for more details.
If you haven't done so,
please email and tell me if you will be able to attend the awards ceremony.
If you want to bring brothers and sisters,
please notify me in your email.
Remember to bring your cameras if you want to take pictures.
