For the first time in its 59 year
history, the Pacific Northwest Section will hold its Summer 2004 meeting
in Alaska at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Speakers for the
meeting already include Ron Graham and Ken Ross (present and past MAA
Presidents, respectively) and Pólya Lecturer I. Martin Isaacs
(University of Wisconsin). Adding to the traditional sessions will be
one on mathematics in the arctic; other specialty sessions are being
planned and will be described on the meeting’s web site. Workshops and
Project NExT are scheduled for June 24th; paper sessions,
invited addresses, banquet, etc. are planned for June 25th &
26th.
This meeting will follow shortly after
one of Alaska’s most exciting days – the summer solstice with Alaska’s
famous midnight sun! To celebrate, members can hike Anchorage’s famous
trails after a day of mathematics and, for those combining vacations
with the meeting, travel web links are included in the meeting’s
website. To reduce travel costs, a block of university residence hall
rooms will be available at reasonable cost (families are welcome).
