Professor Thomas J. Miles (CMU) and Professor Brian McCartin (Kettering U) were presented with the Michigan Section’s Awards for Distinguished Service and for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics, respectively, at the banquet during the 2004 Annual Meeting last May at Oakland University.
Tom was honored for service to the Section in many capacities, to CMU, and to the mathematical community. The citation presented to Tom is reproduced on here.
Brian was honored for 25 years of inspired teaching at Kettering. As the student who nominated him put it, he “creates a passion in students for mathematics.” The citation presented to Brian is reproduced here.
