DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD


The Michigan Section of the Mathematical Association of America is pleased to recognize Professor Thomas J. Miles of Central Michigan University as the 2004 recipient of its Distinguished Service Award. We gratefully acknowledge the many contributions he has made both to our Section and to the greater mathematical community for many years.

Between 1991 and 1997, Professor Miles served the Michigan Section as Secretary-Treasurer, Vice Chair and Program Chair, Chair, and Past Chair. Tom chaired the Distinguished Service Award Committee, the Nominating Committee, and the Committee on Mathematical Awareness. For most of the past thirty years, Tom served as a grader for the MMPC. During one five-year period, he made thirty-seven visits to thirty-one high schools through the High School Visiting Lecturer program. He served as a zonal representative from 1984 through 1990. For six years, Tom served on the national MAA Committee on Sections.

At Central Michigan University Tom has served in a variety of capacities: General Education Coordinator, Executive Assistant to the Department of Mathematics, Acting Chair and Chair of the Department of Mathematics, Associate Dean and Acting Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Acting Vice Provost for Academic Administration. Tom is co-author of the book, Mathematics: One of the Liberal Arts.
