Title of TalkDeclining Marginal Utility Is Not Ordinal - an inconsistency in microeconomics.
AbstractEconomists like to confine their attention to ordinal properties of utility functions. But, the often-quoted principle of declining marginal utility is not ordinal. This situation seems incongruous/inconsistent. I shall carefully define mathematically the following phrases: "utility function", "declining marginal utility" and "ordinal property" in the setting of microeconomics. I shall then show that declining marginal utility is not ordinal.
