2014 MAA Intermountain Section Conference

Student Doing Calculations on a Whiteboard

We are pleased to announce the Spring Meeting of the Intermountain Section of The Mathematical Association of America.  The meeting will be hosted by Utah Valley University (UVU) in Orem, UT, on March 28 and 29.
The program this year includes guest speakers: Paul Zorn (past president of the MAA, St. Olaf College), Annalisa Crannell (Franklin and Marshall College), and Bob Palais (UVU).  Professor Crannell will also give a UVU sponsored colloquium on Thursday March 27 at 7 pm.  We are excited that these guests have accepted our invitation!  They are excellent speakers and experts in their individual fields.  We will also have Short Courses by Bob Palais on Math and Artificial Intelligence for undergraduates, and by Paul Zorn on CUPM 2015: Modernizing curricula in the mathematical sciences for faculty.
We have a full schedule of contributed talks in the areas of Teaching, Pure, and Applied Mathematics.  The contacts for teaching talk session are Ben Woodruff (woodruffb@byui.edu) and Eric Rowley (eric.rowley@usu.edu); the contacts for the pure math session are Henry Zwick (henry.zwick@usu.edu) and Violeta Vasilevska (violeta.vasilevska@uvu.edu); the contacts for the applied math session are Luis Gordillo (luis.gordillo@usu.edu) or Guifang Fu (guifang.fu@usu.edu).  We strongly encourage student research talk submissions.
We will also have an MAA book exhibit, a Student Integration Bee Friday afternoon, a Banquet on Friday night. On Saturday, we will hold a Section Business Meeting, and have planned excursions to the BYU Art Museum at 2:30 pm (80 tickets are available), or to the local trails. More information as well as the registration form can be found on the website at http://sections.maa.org/intermountain/2014Meeting/.  You can contact the local organizers Violeta Vasilevska or Kathy Andrist (kathy.andrist@uvu.edu) for more information.

Abstracts of talks are here.

These meetings are a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends, reconnect with old friends, and learn from each other the skills of our mutual profession.  We look forward to seeing you in March!
