EPaDel MAA Award for Distinguished Service

Please consider nominating a colleague, a respected former mentor, or an inspiring speaker for the EPaDel MAA Award for Distinguished Service.

If you know someone eligible and qualified in our section, we urge you to submit a nomination for the EPaDel MAA Distinguished Service Award. Whether you are a new or a long-term EPaDel member, a junior or tenured faculty member or an industry professional, etc., your nomination is desirable and helpful! Even if the nominee is not selected, it is an honor for the individual to be nominated for this award. Furthermore, nominations are valid for three years so nominees have multiple chances to receive the award.

Award winners are announced at the spring EPaDel meeting, and their nominations will be automatically included for consideration for the MAA Meritorious Service Award, for which our section nominates at most one person every five years. In addition, the award carries a cash prize.

Eligibility and Guidelines

The award is open to a member of the MAA who currently resides (or who has recently resided) in the EPaDel section. The persons selected for the Distinguished Service Award shall be characterized as those who have provided exemplary service that enables the EPaDel Section better able to carry out its purpose and the purpose of the MAA, namely, to promote and celebrate mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level.

In this context, “service” is interpreted in a broad sense to include serving as a dedicated officer of the section, coordinating contests, organizing sessions, acting as a panelist, acting as the coordinating host for a meeting, helping the general public gain a better understanding of and appreciation for mathematics, or participating in any other activity that contributes to the well-being of the section and/or of the MAA.

Section members who have previously won the service award or who have won an MAA service award are not eligible.

Nomination and Selection Process

Nominations are due by December 15 each year. A nomination consists of a letter detailing why the nominee’s service is worthy of consideration for the award. Additional information supporting the nomination (such as recommendations letters containing additional perspectives) is very much welcomed and may indeed strengthen the nomination but is not mandatory. Self-nomination is not permitted.

To nominate someone for the Distinguished Service Award, please fill out this form.

A section service award committee consisting of four section members will review the nominations. The committee may request a CV from a nominee as well as other additional documentation if they deem this necessary to make a determination.

Special consideration will be given to active section members. Nominations are held for three years. After three years, if not selected for the award, the same person may be nominated again. The selection committee shall make its decision with exemplary and distinguished service as its criteria. As such, the committee may choose to make no awards in any given year; only under compelling circumstances will there be more than one award in a single year.
