Report on the 80th Annual Meeting
of the Wisconsin Section of the
Mathematical Association of America

The 80th Annual Spring Meeting of the MAA-Wisconsin Section was hosted by the Milwaukee School of Engineering the weekend of April 13-14, 2012. Registration for the conference began at 12:00 a.m. Friday on the MSOE Campus in Milwaukee, WI. Sessions began at 1:00 p.m. Friday, and the last talk was an invited address from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2012.  This was the first time that the Wisconsin Section met at MSOE.

A total of 164 people registered for the meeting. Of those, 58 were undergraduate students and 2 were graduate students.

During the reception the section enjoyed a favorite event:  FACE OFF - THE MATH GAME SHOW.  The event was organized by Ken Price and Steve Szydlik. Jon Koker was the Master of Ceremonies. The final results were: Carthage College earned 570 points as Euler, a hybrid team with students from Beloit College, UW Stout, and Carthage College earned 380 points as Germain, UW Stevens Point earned 340 points as Lagrange, Ripon College earned 270 points as Hilbert, UW - Eau Claire earned 260 points as Descartes, MSOE earned 210 points as Chern, Lakeland College earned 200 points as Poincare, and UW - Stout earned 130 points as Noether. Congratulations to all of the students for a job well done!

The Friday evening banquet was held in the Todd Wehr Conference Center. A total of 106 people attended the banquet, including 36 undergraduate students. The evening speaker was Jonathan Rogness of the University of Minnesota and the Director of the Mathematics Center for Educational Programs, who presented the banquet address entitled "When Mathematics Meets YouTube."

Four awards were presented to local teachers: Laurie Ellis of Pius XI High School, Samuel Mattke of Alexander Hamilton High School, Deb Mueller of Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, and Thomas Thompson of Heritage Christian School. We congratulate them for their excellent work and committment to mathematics education!
