University of Wisconsin - Stout

1. The meeting was called to order at 8:00 by Section Chair, Kristen Lampe.

2. The minutes of the business meeting of April 17, 2010, were approved as posted.

3. The Treasurer's report was approved as posted on the section website.

4. Governor Jon Kane's report is posted online in the Spring 2011 Newsletter. He reported that the MAA is doing well financially but is running a small deficit. He described the Governor's job, and urged us to participate on national committees. See his online report for more information.

5. James Swenson from UW Platteville was elected Chair-Elect of the section. Congratulations James!

6. The section voted to hold the Spring 2012 meeting at Milwaukee School of Engineering on April 13-14, 2012.

7. The 2013 meeting was tentatively schedule at UW Marshfield, and the 2014 meeting was tentatively scheduled at UW Whitewater.

8. The section voted unanimously to approve the amended bylaws. Thanks to Kristi Lampe and Ben Collins for their hard work in producing and amending this document.

9. Laura Schmidt gave the report for Student Contests. Thanks to Laura and the faculty at UW Stout for coordinating the math contests for the past five years. Beginning next year, the faculty at Viterbo University in La Crosse will serve in this capacity, under the leadership of Dr. Michael Wodzak.

10. Steve Szydlik gave the report on Student Activities. Ken Price and Steve did a fantastic job setting up the FaceOff competition, and they are willing to do it again next year.  Send potential game show questions to Ken or Steve.

11.  Irfan Ul-Haq reported for Wisconsin-NExT. Wisconsin-NExT holds two events per year, one in the fall and one in the spring, and individuals can remain members until tenure. There are currently 29 Wisconsin-NExT fellows. We are looking for a new director to take Irfan's place at the end of his term. Please forward suggestions to Irfan or Ben Collins.

12. Jennifer Kosiak is the new liaison to WMC. She gave a written report, as she was unable to attend the meeting.

13. Ben Collins reported as Public Information Officer that the MAA is encouraging websites to host their sites on their servers, and may be providing a consistent format for all sections. Also, some campuses still need liaisons.

14. Ivars Peterson brought greetings from the MAA. He reminded us that MathFest will be in Lexington, KY, this summer, and will be in Madison in 2012. The MAA is looking for a new executive director to replace Tina Straley when she steps down. He reported that most new initiatives have an "e" in front of them: e-memberships, e-journals, e-books, and more. The MAA website is being redesigned, and now includes the Euler Archive.

15. Clare Hemenway was welcomed as the new section Chair. Kristen thanked Clare and the faculty at UW Stout for an outstanding meeting, and thanked Bob Wilson for his service on the Executive Board.

13. The meeting adjourned at 8:40 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Mark Snavely
Secretary/Treasurer
