Notice from John Carroll University
June 7, 2010

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Dr. Leo Schneider, professor of mathematics. Dr. Schneider is survived by his wife Sue and daughters Carla and Rita.

Dr. Schneider had just completed his 47th  year of service as a full-time member of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.  He came to John Carroll as an instructor in 1963 and worked his way through the academic ranks, becoming a full professor in 1979.  He also chaired the department from 1971 until 1979.  In addition, Dr. Schneider served as the secretary-treasurer of Pi Mu Epsilon, the mathematics honor society, which sponsors an annual conference in conjunction with the Mathematics Association of America’s (MAA) annual MathFest.  Under his leadership, the annual grant awarded to PME by the National Security Agency increased, making it possible for more students to participate in the conference. Dr. Schneider also held several volunteer leadership positions at the state and national level of the MAA’s mathematics competitions, was a recipient of the MAA Ohio Section Distinguished Teaching Award and was a faculty consultant for the Advanced Placement Program in Calculus.
