William “Bill” Friel, Professor Emeritus, died peacefully at Brookhaven
Nursing Home under Hospice care on June 11, 2018. He was
81. Bill earned a BA in Mathematics from Loras
College and an MA in Mathematics from Duquesne
University. Bill retired from UD in 1999 after 36 years of
service. He continued to teach part-time for us until 2007.
Bill taught FORTRAN in Computer Science Department at University
of Dayton, and he was one of the early adopters of MAPLE in our
calculus classrooms. He was active on the Faculty Board and served
many years as Marshal and Head Marshal for UD.
He was very active in the Mathematical Association of America
(MAA), of which he was a member for more than 50 years. He held
elected office in the Ohio Section of the MAA as President
(1987-1988), Secretary-Treasurer (1999-2006), and Treasurer
