THE MAA CERTIFICATE OF MERITORIOUS SERVICE

 

On behalf of MAA-NJ, I extend congratulations to Sister M. Stephanie Sloyan, R.S.M., Professor Emerita of Mathematics, Georgian Court College, on receiving the MAA 2000 Certificate of Meritorious Service at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 2000, Washington, DC. The certificate is presented every five years for service to the MAA at the national level or sectional level. Our section honors Sister Stephanie for her many years of leadership and dedication to the MAA.

 

THE 2000 MAA-NJ DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARD

 

On behalf of MAA-NJ, I extend congratulations to Janet H. Caldwell, Rowan University, on being the recipient of the 2000 MAA-NJ Distinguished Teaching of Mathematics Award. Janet served as co-chair of the Executive Board for the New Jersey Statewide Systemic Initiative and as a member of the Board of Governors of the NJ Mathematics Coalition. She also served on the Board of National Council of Mathematics and as a past president of the Association of Mathematics Teachers of New Jersey.

 

MEETING OF THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS

The Board of Governors met in Washington DC on January 16, 2000. The new executive director, Tina Straley, identified three critical areas for attention: restructuring the membership dues, redesigning the development program, and establishing a variety of services and programs for a wider audience.

 

Jim Gandorf, new Director of Marketing and Membership, reported that the current membership is at 27,728 (up 3% from 1998).

BOARD APPROVALS

 

The Board approved that

…the MAA discontinue distributing the MAA Placement Tests as of June 30, 2000. Existing subscribers shall be offered a perpetual royalty free license to use the tests forever.

…the Association for Research in Mathematics Education (ARUME) be the first Special Interest Group of the MAA (SIGMA)

…Gerald Folland, University of Washington, be the replacement for Harold Boas on the Editorial Board of the Monthly.

 

NEW MAA PUBLICATIONS

 

The Board of Governors has approved the proposal to create and publish a new MAA book series called The MAA Problem Books, a collection of mathematical problems, solutions, and comments covering a broad range of mathematical levels.

 

A sampler of a new general interest magazine, Mathematical World, (MW) was distributed to the Board of Governors. A Survey of MAA membership about MW will be carried out very soon.

 

USAMO

 

Approximately 190 students will be invited to participate in the 29th USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) on May 2, 2000. Six of these top scorers will comprise the USA team for the 41st International Mathematical Olympiad, which will be held in South Korea. IMO 2001 will be held in the Washington DC area.

 

MATHFEST 2000

 

The summer mathematics meetings will be held at University of California, Los Angeles, August 2-3, 2000. Dr. William English Kirwan, President of the Ohio State University, will deliver the second Leitzel Lecture at Mathfest 2000.

 

Vera Pless, University of Illinois at Chicago, is the organizer of the short course, Coding Theory, August 1-2, 2000. Barbara Osofsky, chair of the Short Course Committee, encourages those planning to attend the course to register as soon as possible.
