THE 2000 MAA CERTIFICATE OF MERITORIOUS SERVICE

 

The New Jersey Section of the Mathematical Association of America has selected Sister M. Stephanie Sloyan, R.S.M., Professor Emerita of Mathematics, Georgian Court College, Lakewood, New Jersey, as the recipient of The Mathematical Association of America Certificate of Meritorious Service in recognition of her many years of leadership and dedication to the MAA.

Members of the Selection Committee for this award were Evan Alderfer, Ocean County College; Theresa C. Michnowicz (chair), New Jersey City University; and Naomi Shapiro, Georgian Court College. The Selection Committee invites all members of our section to attend the Prize Session ceremonies at the Joint Mathematics Meetings, January 2000, in Washington, DC, at which Sr. Stephanie will receive this prestigious award for her contributions to the MAA at the national and sectional level.

MAA-NJ GOVERNOR ELECTION

 

Amy Cohen and Reginald Luke are the candidates for the office of governor of the New Jersey Section of the MAA. Amy is a member of the Graduate Faculty at Rutgers University and serves as Vice-Chair of the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics. Reggie, former chair of the Mathematics Department at Middlesex County College, was recently named Dean of Science, Mathematics and Health Technologies at MCC. Their bios will soon be on the MAA-NJ web site.

 

Ballots for this election will be in the mail by February 2000. Please be sure to return your ballot. Members of the Nominating Committee were S. Ashby Foote, Rutgers University; Theresa C. Michnowicz, New Jersey City University; and Barbara Osofsky (chair), Rutgers University.

 

 

 

 

 

MAA NATIONAL ELECTIONS/APPOINTMENTS

 

Congratulations to Barbara Osofsky, Mathematics Department, Rutgers University, on winning the election for the office of First Vice-President of the MAA. Barbara has been a governor of our section, an invited speaker at two joint national meetings of AMS-MAA-SIAM, and a program chair for several MAA MathFests. She continues to chair the MAA Short Course Committee and also serves on several other MAA committees.

 

Other winners of national elections: Ann E. Watkins, California State University, Northridge, as President-Elect and Frank Morgan (MAA-NJ speaker), Williams College, as Second Vice-President.

 

Joseph Malkovitch (MAA-NJ speaker), York College, CUNY, was elected Governor of the Metropolitan New York Section.

 

The Board voted to approve the recommendation of the Search Committee that Tina Straley, Associate Vice-President for Scholarship and Graduate Studies, Kennesaw State University, Georgia, be named Executive Director of the MAA, to succeed Marcia Sward.

 

The Board also approved Joseph Gallian (MAA-NJ speaker), University of Minnesota-Duluth, as the Polya Lecturer for academic years 1999-2000 and

2000-2001. Walter Stromquist (MAA-NJ speaker) was elected Governor-at-Large Representing Mathematicians Outside Academia. Frank Farris, Santa Clara University, CA, was elected Editor-Elect of Mathematics Magazine.
