Upper Peninsula Regional Conference

The Fall 2005 Upper Peninsula Regional Meeting was hosted by Northern Michigan University Friday and Saturday, September 30 and October 1. John Fink, Kalamazoo College, gave an invited talk, "Just How Non-commutative is the Heisenberg Group?", in which he developed some ways to assess commutativity in groups. Tom Sibley, St. John's University, Minnesota, gave the other invited talk, "Toroidal Cartochromography, Or: Map Coloring on Donuts". He presented Heawood's proof of the Four Color Theorem for donuts, completed much earlier than the 1976 proof of the Four Color Theorem for spheres.
