Chairperson's Report

Dan Frohardt The Michigan Section has been fortunate to have a strong tradition of active volunteers. That tradition continues. I would like to thank some of the people who are currently serving the Section, beginning with the Section officers.

John Kiltinen (NMU) is in the middle year of his three-year term as Section Governor. He also helped organize the fall meeting in Marquette. Sid Graham (CMU) joins the Executive Committee as Four-year College Vice Chair and chair of the Program Committee for the annual meeting. Barbara Jur (Macomb CC) is once again Two-year College Vice Chair. Bette Warren (EMU) serves on the Executive Committee in the important role of Past Chair. Some of her duties include chairing both the Nominating Committee and the Distinguished Service Award Committee. Jerry Grossman (OU) continues as Editor of our Newsletter. The high quality of his work should be apparent to all who read this. Ruth Favro (LTU), in her continuing role as Secretary/Treasurer, attends to the essential things that allow the Section to function. Earl Fife (Calvin C) maintains our Web page. I would like to thank Toni Carroll (Siena Heights U) for serving as Public Information Officer (PIO) for the past year, and Matt Wyneken (UM-Flint), who has served as Vice Chair, Chair, and Past Chair during the past three years. Toni and Matt continue to serve the section in other ways this year, Toni with the WAM, and Matt as liaison to the Michigan Science and Mathematics Alliance (MiSMA).

As most long-time members of our Section know, many of these folks have worn other hats for us in the past. Furthermore, many of our Section officers also currently serve in other capacities. Nevertheless, some of our most important work is done by committees that function largely independently of the Section officers. I would particularly like to thank the people who serve by chairing these committees. Bob Messer (Albion C) has taken over the directorship of the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition. Steve Schlicker (GVSU) has taken on the High School Visiting Lecture Program. As Student Activities Coordinator, Paul Fishback (GVSU) is organizing the undergraduate conference to be held in February. Margaret Höft (UM-Dearborn) has worked with John Kiltinen to produce a proposal for Project NExT in Michigan.

This list is not at all complete, and I would also like to thank those people who have served the Section in other ways. In addition, I would like to invite people who may not have been active in the Section recently to consider getting involved (or re-involved). I think you will find it a rewarding experience. Please contact me if you are interested or if you have suggestions for the Section.

One of our most visible activities is the annual meeting. This year it will be held May 5-6 at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant (see following article). Since this is a change from a previously announced date, please check your calendars to be sure that you have marked the correct date, and reserve your hotel rooms early (see the meeting alert). I hope to see you there.
