The next meeting of the Michigan Section of the MAA
and MichMATYC will take place April 29 and 30 at Alma College in Alma,
Michigan. The program committee is planning an exciting and
informative meeting with a variety of talks and discussions on
mathematics, the teaching of mathematics, applications of mathematics,
and other issues of interest to members of the Section. Confirmed
speakers include:
- Richard Tapia, Noah Harding Professor, Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics, Rice University;
- Martin Isaacs, MAA Polya Lecturer and Professor of Mathematics, University of Wisconsin;
- Bruce Palka, Editor of the American Mathematical Monthly, and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Texas, Austin; and
- Harry B. Coonce, Founder and Director of the Mathematics Genealogy Project and Professor of Mathematics at North Dakota State University.
Also on the program will be a member of the writing team for the Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics (CUPM) to present some of the recommendations from their most recent Curriculum Guide, published in 2004. More details about the program will appear in the Spring Newsletter.
In addition to the talks by invited speakers, the program committee is planning sessions for contributed papers. Speaking at a contributed paper session is an excellent way to share the results of your work and to become better acquainted with your colleagues in Michigan. All members of the Section are encouraged to submit abstracts of papers to be presented in these sessions. Contributed papers may be on mathematical topics or may discuss curriculum or pedagogy. Instructions for contributing abstracts for one of the sessions are included in the “Call for Papers” in this Newsletter.
The meeting is scheduled to run all day Friday and through noon on Saturday. There will be luncheons both days and a banquet Friday evening. As is our custom, the Section will present both a teaching award and a service award at the Friday banquet.
The program committee for this year includes of co-chairs John Fink (Kalamazoo C) and Mark Naber (Monroe CC) along with David Murphy (Kalamazoo C), Christine Browning (WMU), and Tim Sipka (Alma C).
