Distinguished Service Award
The Michigan Section of the Mathematical Association of America is pleased to recognize Bette L. Warren, Professor of Mathematics, Eastern Michigan University, as the 2002 recipient of its Distinguished Service Award. We gratefully acknowledge the many contributions she has made both to our Section and to the larger mathematical community for many years.
Bette served the Michigan Section as the Chair of Women’s Study Committee, as Secretary/Treasurer, as Vice-Chair and Program Chair, Chair, Past Chair, HSVLP Co-director, Chair of the Nominating Committee, and candidate for Governor.
In addition, Bette has taken a strong leadership role in the Michigan Women and Mathematics project. She organized support gatherings, scheduled activities, helped implement a grant from the Tensor foundation, organized outreach activities, shared wisdom with the women mathematicians in the state, and provided a vision for the future activities of the group.
At Eastern Michigan University, Bette has chaired numerous committees for the department, college, university, and AAUP. She served as President of the University Faculty Council (1992–1995), and she was awarded the 1995 EMU Distinguished Faculty Award for Service to the University.
