Members Honored with Highest Awards

Professor John Fink (Kalamazoo C) and Professor Douglas Nance (CMU, retired) were presented with the Michigan Section’s Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics and for Distinguished Service, respectively, at the banquet during the 2001 annual meeting last April in Holland.

John was cited for, among other things, his work on calculus reform and enrichment programs for bright junior high school students in the Kalamazoo area. The citation presented to him at the meeting is shown on Distinguished Teaching Award to John Fink.

Doug served in many roles in the Section and the national MAA over the years. Coincidentally, it was during his chairmanship of the Section that the first distinguished service award was given. The citation presented to him at the meeting is shown on Distinguished Service Award to Douglas W. Nance.

Pictures of both recipients are included in the annual meeting photospread on Pictures from the Annual Meeting at Hope College. See Nominations Sought for Awards and Offices for details on the solicitation of nominations for the distinguished teaching award and the distinguished service award for 2002.
