Two Proposed Changes to the Bylaws


The Committee on Sections suggested that we make minor changes to our current section bylaws. The first change is the addition of Article III Avoiding Implicit Bias:
The Maryland-District of Columbia-Virginia Section of the Mathematical Association of America shall make every effort to avoid implicit bias and to reflect the diversity of the section. The Section shall ensure its committee members, officers, invited speakers, awardees, and other leaders represent the various geographic regions, types of institutions, and diverse membership within the section. It shall strive for balanced representation with regard to gender as well as underrepresented groups, and shall seek out nominations for any positions or awards to help achieve that balance. Section committees and members may consult the most recent version of the document Guidelines for MAA Selection Committees: Avoiding Implicit Bias for guidance.

The second change involves Article IV (Officers and Executive Committee) Item 4. Here is the current version of Item 4:
The Newsletter Editor, the New Faculty Coordinator, and each At-Large Director shall be elected for two year terms to begin immediately after the spring meeting at which he or she is elected. The Newsletter Editor and one At-Large Director are elected in odd-numbered years; the New Faculty Coordinator and the other At-Large Director are elected in even-numbered years.

The Student Activities Coordinator, Director of Member Communications, Webmaster, Secretary and the Treasurer shall each be elected for three year terms to begin immediately after the spring meeting at which he or she is elected. The election for Secretary shall come in the year following that for Treasurer.

Below is the revised version. In it, “he or she” has been replaced with “they” and there is a change in the language concerning the years in which certain officers are elected.
The Newsletter Editor, the New Faculty Coordinator, and each At-Large Director shall be elected for two year terms to begin immediately after the spring meeting at which they are elected. The Newsletter Editor and one At-Large Director are elected in odd-numbered years; the New Faculty Coordinator and the other At-Large Director are elected in even-numbered years.

The Student Activities Coordinator, Director of Member Communications, Webmaster, Secretary and the Treasurer shall each be elected for three year terms to begin immediately after the spring meeting at which they are elected. In the first year of the three year cycle the Treasurer shall be elected; in the second year the Secretary, Student Activities Coordinator, and Director of Member Communications shall be elected; in the third year the Webmaster shall be elected. The year 2020 shall be the first year of one such cycle.
