INMAA Spring Meeting: April 8-9 at Indiana Wesleyan University

Greetings to members and friends of the Indiana Section of the MAA.

I hope that your semester is going well and you are planning to attend our Spring Section Meeting at Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday and Saturday, April 8-9, 2011.

We are privileged to have three invited speakers with us at the meeting. Gerard A. Venema  of Calvin College, who is the MAA Associate Secretary and Section Visitor,  will present an after dinner talk Dimension Theory for Undergraduates”on Friday and  “Fractals and Wild Cantor Sets” on Saturday morning.  Jeffrey X. Watt of IUPUI, who is the 2010 Indiana State Professor of the Year, will talk about his NSF STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP) Grant. Lesley Wiglesworth of Centre College will lead a student workshop on graph theory.

We have a Call for Papers, Meeting Registration Form, Preliminary Program, and Lodging & Directions available on our section web page http://sections.maa.org/indiana/.  Please consider giving a talk.  The deadline for abstracts is Friday March 25(*).  Encourage your students to attend the meeting, give talks and participate in the Friendly Competition (ICMC). The registration deadline and ICMC registration deadline is Sunday, April 3rd.

Please remember that the electronic ballot for Governor election due date is March 15, 2011. Please read how to provide your input to MAA study on The Mathematical Sciences in 2025 in our Current Newsletter.

During our annual business meeting, we will have two formal appointments: Adam Coffman (IPFW) to continue as Public Information Officer and William Turner (Wabash College) to continue as Newsletter Editor. As my term as Chair expires, Patrick Sullivan (Valparaiso University), will become Chair of the section. The Nominating Committee has put forward Melvin Royer (Indiana Wesleyan University) as a nominee for Vice Chair and Andy Rich (Manchester College) as a nominee for Secretary in 2011/12 year.  Other nominations for the two positions will be accepted, and the membership will then elect our next Vice Chair and Secretary.

I want to thank the Executive Board for helping the organization run smoothly; we all appreciate their hard work.  If you are interested in helping with governing the section or helping in any other way, please let any of us know.

I look forward to seeing you at our meeting in April.

Vesna Kilibarda

Chair of the Indiana Section of the MAA
