MAA
Greetings to all friends of the INMAA,

I hope that you all have had a fun and productive summer. I would like to invite you all to attend the fall meeting of the Indiana Section at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville on Saturday October 26. Our featured speaker will be physicist Neeti Parashar who is on the team that confirmed the Higgs boson. She will be speaking on her role in the search for the particle.

We eagerly invite contributed talks, including those by students. A Call for Papers, Meeting Registration Form, and information on Lodging & Directions is on our web page at http://www.maa.org/indiana. The deadline for submission of a contributed talk is Friday, October 11.  Student speakers will receive a coupon good for a free, or significantly discounted, book at the meeting's on-site book sale.

Early registration for the conference runs through Sunday, October 20; early registration guarantees a cheaper rate as well as availability of meals.

As usual, we are seeking nominations for the Indiana Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics and the Indiana Section Award for Distinguished Service. For details on how to submit a nomination for the teaching award please go to http://sections.maa.org/indiana/awards/teachnom.html. For details on the service award please go to http://sections.maa.org/indiana/awards/servicenom.html.

Nominations for the awards are due by January 17, 2014, and those submitting a nomination receive a coupon toward a book at the meeting sale.

I appreciate the past and continued work of the INMAA leadership. Past-chair Melvin Royer organized two very successful section meetings at Butler University and Indiana University East.  Our current Executive Board members are: John Rickert (vice-chair and chair elect), Haseeb Kazi (secretary), Adam Coffman (public information officer), Justin Gash (student activities coordinator) and Michael Karls (section governor). Michael Karls' term is expiring, and we be forming a committee to select his replacement. Please let any executive board member know if you are willing to serve on this important committee. Lara Pudwell is currently the coordinator for the Project NExT committee.  I commend all of our committee members for their valuable service to the Indiana Section.

Also, we are in need of volunteers for the nominating committee and the distinguished service award committee. Please let me (merk@purduecal.edu) know if you are interested in serving on one of these committees.

The Executive Board invites your comments and suggestions for activities within the Section.

I look forward to seeing you at the University of Southern Indiana.

Rob Merkovsky

INMAA Section Chair
