INMAA Fall Meeting: October 27 at Butler University

INMAA friends,

Please make plans to attend our October 27 section meeting at Butler University in Indianapolis.  Invited speakers will be (1) Paul Zorn, MAA president and Professor of Mathematics at St. Olaf college, speaking on “Picturing Analysis” and (2) Sam Wagstaff, Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University West Lafayette, speaking on “The Search for Aurifeuillian-Like Factorizations in the Cunningham Tables.”

Please also consider giving a contributed talk at this meeting.  A call for papers is on our web page at http://www.maa.org/indiana.  The deadline for submission of a talk is Friday October 12, 2012.  Invite your undergraduate and graduate students to give a talk. Student speakers (undergraduate and graduate) will receive a coupon good for a free, or significantly discounted, book at the meeting's on-site book sale.  Early registration for the conference is Sunday October 21; early registration guarantees the cheaper rate as well as availability of a meal at lunch. Information about directions, local hotels, registration and submittal of talks is also available on our web page.
As usual, we are seeking nominations for the Indiana Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics and the Indiana Section Award for Distinguished Service. For details on how to submit a nomination for the teaching award please go to http://sections.maa.org/indiana/awards/teachnom.html. For details on the service award please go to http://sections.maa.org/indiana/awards/servicenom.html.  Nominations for the awards are due by January 18, 2013, and those submitting a nomination receive a coupon toward a book at the meeting sale.

David Housman (Goshen College) is serving as the first coordinator of the Indiana MAA Section Visitor Program.  Indiana schools interested in hosting a section visitor may contact David for a list of available speakers and topics.  Travel costs for visitors are covered by the INMAA, and no honorarium is expected.

I appreciate the past and continued work of the INMAA leadership.  Past-chair Patrick Sullivan organized two very successful section meetings at the University of Indianapolis and Ball State.  Robert Merkovsky has been elected vice-chair.  Charles Peltier was succeeded as treasurer by Kurt Bryan.  Continuing officers include Andy Rich (secretary), Adam Coffman (public information officer), Justin Gash (student activities coordinator) and Michael Karls (section governor).   Justin Gash completed his term as Indiana Project NExT coordinator and has been succeeded by Lara Pudwell.  Other committee members continue to do their usual good work.  Feel free to contact any of these people with ideas you have for the Indiana MAA Section.

I look forward to seeing you at Butler.

Mel Royer
INMAA Section Chair
