I would like to invite everyone to our fall section meeting which will be held on Saturday, October 22 at the University of Indianapolis. We are very privileged this year to have a Pólya Lecturer. George Pólya embodied the high quality of exposition which the Mathematical Association of America seeks to encourage. To further this goal, the Board of Governors of the Association established the George Pólya Lectureship. This Lectureship will be held by an individual representing the high expository standards set by George Pólya. Each Section is eligible to have a Pólya Lecturer speak at one of its meetings once every five academic years and this is our year. The speaker will be Jeff Lagarias, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan.
I would also invite you to give a contributed talk at this meeting. The deadline for submission is October 7, 2011. Please urge your undergraduate and graduate students to give a talk. Student speakers (undergraduate and graduate) will receive a coupon good for a free, or significantly discounted, book at the meeting's on-site book sale.
Due to a convention happening the same weekend as our meeting, hotel rooms in Indianapolis will be in short supply. If you plan on spending the night, be sure to make arrangements soon.
Last year we were unable to find winners for the Indiana Section Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics and the Indiana Section Award for Distinguished Service. I know that there are several members deserving of these awards and would like to see winners selected this year. For details on how to submit a nomination for the teaching award please go to http://sections.maa.org/indiana/awards/teachnom.html. For details on the service award please go to http://sections.maa.org/indiana/awards/servicenom.html.
