Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Distinguished Service Award

Citation to

G. Elton Graves

The Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1993 to honor a member of the Section by acknowledging his or her extraordinary contributions to the Section and outstanding efforts consistent with the stated purposes of the Mathematical Association of America and the Section, namely, assisting in promoting the interests of, and improving education in, the mathematical sciences in America, especially at the collegiate level.

Among the many Section members deserving such recognition is the one individual we honor this evening. He has been one of our most committed leaders and has always been willing to support other individuals as they work for the section.

The individual that I am speaking of is Elton Graves of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Since arriving at Rose, Elton has served his department as an effective classroom teacher, including coordinating and teaching Rose- Hulman's "Fast Track Calculus" program. His interest in teaching has also led Elton to be a mentor in the NEXT-IN program from 1996-1998.

Elton received a Certificate of Appreciation from the section in 1996 when he retired from editing the section newsletter. He did outstanding work in this job from 1982 to 1996.

Many of us know Elton from his service as the Indiana State Director of the American Junior High School Mathematics Exam and the American High School Mathematics Exam. He has served as director for these programs since 1989. He has also served on the MAA's Executive Advisory Committee to American Mathematics Competitions since 1992.

Congratulations to Elton Graves, recipient of the 1999 Distinguished Service Award.

Underwood Dudley, Chair
Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
