"Making Beautiful Music in the Mathematics Classroom" Part I     by Matt DeLong
In fact, sometimes I feel like the arithmetic teacher in Les Choristes, the 2005 French film about a down-and-out musician who becomes the prefect at a school for “bad boys.” He transforms the school, and one boy in particular, by starting a choir. In the film the arithmetic teacher becomes the accompanist for the choir. In one particularly telling scene, the arithmetic teacher enters with face aglow while the boys are practicing their singing. He briefly discusses his obvious passion for music with the choir master. After the choir master leaves, the arithmetic teacher’s countenance changes suddenly, and with a flat affect he announces, “Arithmetic. Page 27.”
