Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a successful program sponsored by the MAA and the Exxon Education Foundation which helps new college faculty to improve teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics. It also helps these new faculty members to begin getting involved in the mathematical community beyond their own institutions.
The success of Project NExT on the national level has prompted a number of MAA sections to organize their own local versions of this program. The fifth annual ISMAA Project NExT program will be held in conjunction with the ISMAA annual meeting at Illinois College in Jacksonville, Illinois, March 28 - 29, 2003. Up to nine ISMAA Project NExT fellows will be selected to participate in this program. Anyone within their first four years of teaching (after finishing a master's or doctoral degree) at any two or four-year college or university in Illinois is eligible, as well as any graduate students at universities in Illinois who are completing their PhD this year. ISMAA Project NExT fellows' meeting registration and opening banquet fees will be paid for by the ISMAA Project NExT, both for spring 2003 and spring 2004 meetings.
The spring program will begin on the morning of Friday, March 28, with Max Gerling of Eastern Illinois University sharing thoughts on the topic of preparing mathematics teachers, followed by an opening lunch at which new ISMAA NExT fellows will have an opportunity to get to know one another as well as sectional fellows from previous years and the national NExT fellows who are members of the ISMAA.
The ISMAA Project NExT program will conclude on the afternoon of Saturday, March 29, following the closing address of the ISMAA meeting. After a brief box lunch program participants will participate in the post-conference session on Student Academic Assessment.
