The 2000 Annual Meeting of the Illinois Section of the MAA

The Seventy-Ninth Annual Meeting of the Illinois Section of the Mathematical Association of America will take place on the campus of North Central College in Naperville, Illinois on March 31 and April 1, 2000.

The program includes a Mini Course by Fred Rickey of the United States Military Academy, addresses by Donald Saari of Northwestern University, Gideon Weinstein of the United States Military Academy, and Nasrollah Etemadi of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Ben Fitzpatrick from the Legacy of R.L. Moore project will give the after dinner talk at the banquet. In addition there will be presentations from your colleagues from around the state including several faculty new to the section. A special Project NExT program will be held in conjunction with the ISMAA meeting.

Mini Course

A mini course in the History of Mathematics, will be presented by V. Frederick Rickey of the United States Military Academy. Dr. Rickey has been an active figure in the use of history in the teaching of undergraduate mathematics. He recently relocated to the USMA from Bowling Green University in Ohio.

Banquet

The reception and banquet will be held Friday evening starting at 5:30 in the White Activities Center. After dinner festivities include presentation of the annual ISMAA Distinguished Service Award, presentation of the Distinguished College or University Teaching Award, and a talk by Ben Fitzpatrick from the Legacy of R.L. Moore Project. The title for Prof. Fitzpatrick's talk is The Students of R.L. Moore.

The cost of the dinner is $25.00. Banquet tickets must be purchased in advance. Please specify your choice of Crispy Chicken with asparagus sauce, Spicy Pork Tenderloin, or Zucchini and tomatoes with pasta.

Student Activities

A number of activities of particular interest to Mathematics Students are scheduled including a mathematics contest Friday afternoon, a Friday evening Pizza Party, and student presentations Saturday morning.

Students are encouraged to attend any of the sessions.

Naperville Area Information

Meeting Location

Naperville, Illinois is located just west of Chicago. The East-West Tollway (I-88), the North-South Tollway (I-355), and U.S. 34 (Odgen Avenue) are the major roads leading into Naperville.

North Central College is located at Loomis and Benton Streets. See Directions to Campus for specific instructions on how to get to North Central College. Maps showing the major roads to the area and the campus area are available directly from the North Central College Web site.

The ISMAA sessions will be held in Old Main, the Friday Banquet will be held in the White Activities Center, and the Saturday Morning Breakfast will be in the Larrance Academic Center. The location of these buildings is shown on the North Central College Campus Map.

Parking will be difficult on Friday. You are welcome to park in any open space on campus - things begin to fee up in the afternoon. There is always parking available in the surrounding areas, but the four hour limit is strictly enforced. The Naperville municpal garage is at Chicago and Washington Streets is only 5 minutes way. Parking space should be more plentiful on Saturday.

Getting Around in Illinois from the Illinois Department of Transportation provides a number of links to sources of travel infomration in Illinois including the following:

Naperville is served by Amtrak and Burlington Northern Santa Fa Line on Metra, the Chicago area commuter rail system. There is a Metra station close to the college, but Amtrak does not stop there. See also Naperville's transportation page.

Participants are responsible for making their own hotel/motel reservations. No hotel/motel is within walking distance of campus with the exception of the Stardust Inn.

Registration

The registration fee is $24.00 ($9.00 for student or retired members). The cost of the Friday morning Minicourse is $30.00. The cost of the Friday evening Banquet is $25.00 and there is a choice of Crispy Chicken with asparagus sauce, Spicy Pork Tenderloin, or Zucchini and tomatoes with pasta.

The meeting registration fee may be paid at the meeting; however, advanced registration (with payment) is required for the Friday evening banquet and Saturday morning breakfast. Banquet and breakfast tickets will not be available on-site. Aadvance registration for the minicourse is strongly recommended; however, space permitting, registration may be made on site.

ISMAA Board Meeting
There will be a ISMAA Board of Directors meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 30, 2000 in the Swing Confernce Room on the fourth floor of Old Main.

There will be a special Project NExT program in conjuction with this meeting.
Saturday Breakfast
A continental breakfast will be available in the Heiningr Auditorium of the Larrance Academic Center Saturday Morning from 7:30-8:20 a.m.. Advance registration is required.
2001 Annual Meeting
The 2001 ISMAA Annual Meeting will be held at University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.
