The 2005 Joint Meetings will bring together Florida’s dedicated mathematicians – professional and non-professional – for a weekend of exciting lectures, talks, and discussions on a variety of mathematical topics.
The plenary speakers for the conference will be David Bressoud, Brian Conrey, and James Lang.
David Bressoud, DeWitt Professor of Mathematics at Macalester College, received his Ph.D. in Mathematics at Temple University in 1977. He is a MAA Polya Lecturer and the chair of MAA's Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics (CUPM). His areas of interest are Number Theory, Combinatorics, and Analysis. For more information, visit http://www.macalester.edu/~bressoud/.
Brian Conrey, Professor of Mathematics at Oklahoma State University, received his Ph.D. in Mathematics at Michigan in 1980. He is the Executive Director of the American Institute of Mathematics. His area of interest is Analytic Number Theory, especially the analytic theory of L-functions. For more information, visit http://www.math.okstate.edu/~conrey/.
James Lang, Professor of Mathematics at Valencia Community College, will speak on the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Florida Junior College Council of Teachers of Mathematics (FJCCTM) which grew to become FTYCMA. For more information, visit http://www.ftycma.org.
In addition to these three distinguished plenary speakers, there will be invited talks by some of the state’s leading mathematics professionals as well as student presentations.
Other events include:
FTYCMA Annual Business Meeting and Luncheon, Friday
Conference Banquet and Awards Ceremony, Friday
Annual Business Meeting and Luncheon, Saturday |
More information on the program will be available soon.
We invite talks (45 minutes) from mathematicians in the State University System, the Florida Community College System, and the state’s private colleges and universities. Undergraduate students are also invited to participate with presentations (20 minutes).
Those who wish to be considered for the program should e-mail their name, institutional affiliation, category of the presentation (research, exposition, pedagogy, student paper, etc.), title, and an abstract of fifty words or less to the Vice-President for Programs:

Regional MeetingsFlorida Section
|
Of the six Florida MAA regions, Suncoast is the only region that currently has a meeting scheduled for this academic year. The First Coast region is working on scheduling a spring meeting, the West Coast region has postponed its meeting until Fall 2005, and the other three regions seem to have lost momentum. We may want to see if we can facilitate planning and recruit volunteers to organize regional meetings at this year's state meeting.
Big Bend
No meeting planned at this time. No one has stepped forward to take over for Ben Fusaro, Florida State University.
Central Florida
No meeting planned at this time.
Firstcoast
Scott Hochwald, shochwal@unf.edu, University of North Florida, is working on scheduling a meeting for the First Coast region.
Goldcoast
No meeting planned at this time.
Suncoast
The Suncoast regional meeting is scheduled for December 3rd at St. Petersburg College, Tarpon Springs campus, and an announcement is in the October newsletter. The contact person is Carolyn Kistner, kistner.carolyn@spcollege.edu, St. Petersburg College.
West Florida
The West Florida regional meeting, originally planned for Spring 2005, has been postponed to Fall 2005 because of the recent hurricanes. Dr. Schell, University of West Florida, will be the organizer, with the assistance of Dr. Kuiyuan Li, kli@uwf.edu, also at the University of West Florida.

Jim Rutledge was invited to review and evaluate the Tennessee Board of Regents' Regents Online Degree Program in Mathematics. He gave presentations to math faculty from across the state of Tennessee in June on Active Learning in the Online Environment. Professor Rutledge also gave presentations on active learning at the MERLOT International Conference in Costa Mesa, California, in August, and represented St. Petersburg College as Editor-in-chief of the MERLOT Mathematics editorial board. He was nominated by the St. Petersburg College Board of Trustees for the William H. Meardy Faculty Award sponsored by the Association of Community College Trustees.
Daryl Schrader wrote an article on the St. Petersburg College Planetarium and Astronomy program which was published in the summer issue of Southern Skies: Journal of the Southeastern Planetarium Association. He was interviewed on Tampa Bay's Channel 10 on July 30th on the Blue Moon and on August 11th on the Perseid Meteor Shower. Professor Schrader lectured on Jupiter and the Killer Comet at Great Explorations for their National Astronomy Day celebration. He will give a lecture on Relativity and Black Holes on December 11th at the Science Center of Pinellas County for the World of Physics 2005 celebration. His biographical profile will appear in Who’s Who in America, 59th Edition.
Al Goodman
Al Goodman was born on July 20, 1915, in San Antonio, Texas. He obtained a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering and a M.A. in Mathematics from the University of Cincinnati. During World War II, he worked at the United States Navy Yard, the Army Specialized Training Program, and for Republic Aviation Corporation. After the war, he received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from Columbia University and then spent two years at Rutgers University and fifteen years at the University of Kentucky as an Associate and later Full professor. In 1964 he moved to the University of South Florida where he became a Distinguished Service Professor. He retired from teaching in 1993, becoming a Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in 1995. He published over seventy research papers – mostly in geometric function theory but also in set theory, number theory, and graph theory. He also wrote twelve elementary textbooks, including Analytic Geometry and the Calculus, and a five-volume work Algebra from A to Z, on high school and college algebra.
Transitions
Saralees Nadarajah, who had received his Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield in 1994, and had worked in England, California and New Zealand before coming to USF, left us last fall. An author of six books and over seventy articles, he is now at the University of Nebraska. We wish him well on his further adventures.
New Faculty
Helen Gerretson joins USF as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education. Dr. Gerretson received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida and is joining USF from the University of Northern Colorado where she had a position in the mathematics department.
George Yanev joins USF as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics. Dr. Yanev received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Sophia (Bulgaria) and was a Research Fellow at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences for six years. He received a Ph.D. in mathematics with a statistics concentration from USF in 2001 and for the past four years he was an Assistant Professor with the Environmental Science, Policy and Geography program at USF St. Petersburg campus. His research interests include statistical modeling, branching stochastic processes, and Bayesian inference.
