President's Message

Florida Section
The Mathematical Association of America

Jacci White

I am honored to serve as the president of the Florida Section of the Mathematical Association of America.  I appreciate the opportunity to work with such a dynamic executive board and to meet so many new mathematicians in Florida and the United States.  I feel honored to represent my colleagues in MAA.

I would like start with a word of thanks to all who made the 2006 Joint Annual Meetings of the Florida Section of the Mathematical Association of America and the Florida Two-Year College Mathematics Association such a success at Florida Atlantic University.  These meetings are made successful through the hard work of the planning committee, the excellent presentations, but most importantly by the interaction among the diverse group of attendees.  The Joint Meetings of the FL-MAA and FTYCMA are a great opportunity to share ideas and make new friends.  I would also like to thank the 2006 executive board as they prepare for the 40th Annual Meeting and for their insightful discussions as we share new ideas for the future of the Florida Section.

Exciting plans are underway for the 2007 Joint Annual Meetings of the FL-MAA and FTYCMA to be held at Tallahassee Community College on February 16-17, 2007.  I hope you are able to attend and will encourage your students and junior faculty members to come with you.  I want to let everyone know that student presenters at our section meetings receive free membership to the National MAA, or a free MAA book if they are already student members of MAA.  In addition we have expanded the prizes for student mathematics competitions at the conference.

On the national level, MathFest was a fun filled week.  The Mathematical Association of America is planning a Centennial celebration for MathFest 2015.  Our section flag should appear in a parade of section flags.  In addition, MAA national is looking for a Centennial Section Planner from each section.  Please contact me if you are interested in working on the Centennial celebration (jacci.white@saintleo.edu).  The MathFest centennial celebration will take place in Washington, DC on August 5-8, 2015.

Abstracts

bulletCarl Cowen, Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis School of Science
Connections Between Math and Biology

Dr. Rita Colwell, a research microbiologist and former Director of the National Science Foundation, regards the mathematical sciences as the backbone for US Scientific and Engineering research.  Many scholars see the next few decades as a time of intensive progress in the biological sciences.  Dr. Colwell sees mathematics as being an integral part of the progress in biology, not a traditional view, but a forward looking one.

In this talk, Carl Cowen will outline some of the research areas in the emerging collaborations between mathematical and biological scientists.  In addition, Cowen, who began his study of the mathematics of neuroscience in 2002-03 at the Mathematical Biosciences Institute at Ohio State University, and who worked in 2003-04 as a junior post-doc in the lab of Prof. Christie Sahley in the Purdue University Biology Department, will illustrate the connection between mathematics and neuroscience with a discussion of the Pulfrich phenomenon, an experiment that helps illuminate how the brain processes visual images.  There are few mathematical or biological prerequisites for this discussion.

bulletBruce Edwards, University of Florida
Understanding How Your Calculator Calculates

What happens when you press the sine key on your calculator?  How does a calculator quickly produce the values of trigonometric functions?  For instance, how does the TI-89 calculate sin 1.0?  You might be surprised to know that the calculator does not use series or polynomial approximation, but rather a simple algorithm called the CORDIC method.  In fact, the CORDIC method is used for almost all function evaluations (trigonometric, logarithmic, exponential, hyperbolic, inverse functions, etc.), and even multiplication and division.  In this session the main ideas of the CORDIC method will be presented, along with some elementary examples.

bulletJames Tanton, St. Mark's School
More than a Dozen Proofs that 1=2:  A Misguided Review of all of Mathematics

Guidobaldo del Monte (1545 – 1647), a patron and friend of Galileo Galilei, believed he had witnessed the creation of something out of nothing when he established mathematically that zero equals one.  He thereby thought that he had proven the existence of God!  Although I daren’t be so bold with my claims, I am willing to prove instead that one equals two.  And moreover, just to convince you that I am right, I will do so multiple times over, drawing upon a wide spectrum of mathematical techniques, from algebra and arithmetic, to probability theory, calculus, mechanics, propositional logic, and more!  Will you be able to find fault with any of my “proofs?”

The Mathematical Association of America

Daniel Jelsovsky

We will continue our integral contest for a third straight year at the Sectional Meeting in February.  We are still offering a $50 first prize and a $25 second prize.  The winners in 2006 were Cody Hadley (1st place) and Thom Dodge (2nd place) from Manatee Community College.

This year, we will offer a sudoku contest for undergraduates.  Students who correctly solve the puzzles in the allotted time period will be placed in a drawing for prizes.

We are continuing a small stipend for student speakers.  Any undergraduate student speaking at this year’s meeting will receive a $25 stipend, as well as a free banquet the first night of the meeting.  At the 2006 meeting, Robert Lamar and Martin Storm of Stetson University each gave presentations.
