Faculty News:

  • Daryl Schrader is retiring after more than 40 years of teaching at various Florida institutions including St Petersburg College, University of South Florida, Hillsborough Community College, two public high schools and two private schools. He began teaching at SPC in 1977 where he has taught mathematics, physics, astronomy and karate. Daryl received the Phi Theta Kappa Faculty Scholar Award in 2003.

    Daryl has written an Astronomy column for the St. Petersburg Times since 1990; he was also promoted to 9th degree black belt in Karate. Daryl served as the chair of the Computer and Mathematics section of the Florida Academy of Sciences for close to ten years. He has given over 100 lectures to the public, school groups and professional organizations. In addition, he has given numerous public events than include a Halley Comet Watch that drew over 20,000 participants and various Astronomy Day activities that were attended by thousands.

    Daryl plans to continue with his academic endeavors in the years to come.

  • Toni Watson is leaving SPC to pursue her career closer to family in Virginia.
  • David Bueller is relocating to West Virginia while his wife completes her medical residency there.
  • Bill Hemme will be joining the St. Petersburg/Gibbs faculty in the fall after serving as Program Director for the Mathematics and Natural Science departments at the Clearwater campus for the past few years.
  • Student News:

  • Wanda Wilson-Corbett received the Burt Mathematics Award. This award is presented annually to a St. Petersburg/Gibbs student who plans to pursue a career in teaching mathematics.
  • Margaret Beck, Shawn Bongiorno and Kira Barrera received William Ketchum Memorial Mathematics Awards.
  • Dylan Sprague received the William R. Rice Mathematics Award.
  • Department News

  • The St. Petersburg/Gibbs Math department raised over $3,000.00 during the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in April. This amount qualified for the American Cancer Society’s Bronze team category. Karen Estes served as the Math team captain.
