Student News

Tasha Hinds received the Burt Mathematics Award.  This award is presented annually to a St. Petersburg/Gibbs student who plans to pursue a career in teaching mathematics.

Jane Thai and Guillermo Cordero were jointly awarded the Cele Herring Mathematics Scholarship.

Frederick Bartelt and Eric Francis were jointly awarded the William Ketchum Memorial Mathematics Scholarship.

Steven Bradshaw received the William R. Rice Mathematics Award.

Faculty News

Judy Fraser is retiring after 37 years of teaching, the last 31 years at St. Petersburg College.  She was honored as Professor Emeritus at the college's spring graduation ceremony.  Retirement plans include building a second home in the North Carolina mountains, adding to her travel diaries, and sleeping past 4:45 in the morning.

Betty Pate is retiring after 19 years at St. Petersburg College.  She has taught all courses from Prealgebra to Calculus as well as College Geometry for the College of Education at St. Petersburg College and Math Methods at the University of South Florida.  She has always put her students first and has done everything that she could do to help them.  Her motto: It is not so much what is poured into a student's mind, but what is planted there that counts.  Betty will be going into the real estate business after retirement.

Jim Rutledge participated in the MERLOT Editors Midyear Meeting in Atlanta in January and represented MERLOT Mathematics at the SERC Pedagogic Service Collaborators Meeting at Carleton College in March.

Department News

The St. Petersburg/Gibbs Math department raised over $5,500.00 during the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in April.  This was the second highest amount raised by departments throughout the college and qualified for the American Cancer Society’s Silver team category.  Judy Fraser once again served as the Math team captain.
