Executive Committee Meeting

President Jacci White called the meeting to order at 10:00am.

In attendance: Joel Berman (Valencia CC), VP-Programs; Liz Dameron (Tallahassee CC), Local Arrangements Committee; Eduardo Fernandez (Eckerd), VP-Site Selection; Daniel Jelsovsky (Florida Southern), Coordinator of Student Activities; David Kerr (Eckerd), Governor; Lubomir Markov (Barry), President-elect; Bill Rush (St. Petersburg College), Newsletter Editor; John Salack (Tallahassee CC), Local Arrangements Committee; John Waters (Manatee CC), Secretary/Treasurer; Jacci White (St. Leo), President.

The minutes from the Executive Committee Meeting of February 17, 2006 were approved. Reports:

  1. Jacci White reported that the MAA encourages institutions to develop, coordinate and host professional development programs for faculty as part of the PREP initiative. Information on PREP and the guidelines for submitting new proposals are available on the MAA website with final deadlines annually each July.
  2. Jacci White reported that the 2006-2008 officers of FTYCMA are:

  3. Jacci White reported on a Local Arrangments Checklist she has developed which provides guidance to host institutions as to what they have to do when.
  4. Jacci White reported that Nancy Hagelgans, chair of the MAA Committee on Sections, is available to assist sections in coordinating national speakers. It was reiterated that every 5 years sections are eligible for a Polya Lecturer and every year sections may invite a national officer.
  5. Jacci White reported that Steph Fitchett has been tasked to look into the possibility of forming a section NExT in Florida.
  6. John Waters reported that as of 6/13/06 our balance was $9,128.36 and that all required financial reports have been sent to MAA national.
  7. David Kerr reported that MAA national is currently engaged in a program with the American Institute of Physics (AIP) in developing 90 second spots for television which highlight current topics in science and mathematics. To date, the MAA has developed a number of these TV spots and they are available for preview on the AIP website . Faculty are welcome to contact Joe Gallian at to submit ideas for additional television spots. David also reported on several new MAA books that have been published this past year. A CD highlighting some of Martin Gardner's articles from Scientific American is the top seller for the MAA.
  8. David Kerr reported that a committee consisting of himself, Steph Fitchett and Jacci White selected Marilyn Repsher of Jacksonville University for receipt of the MAA's National Distinguished Service Award. The award is to be presented to Marilyn at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in New Orleans, January 2007.
  9. Bill Rush reported that the section's website continues to receive lots of hits and that the format of posting our newsletters electronically is working well.
  10. Lubo Markov reported on a national initiative to make October 29th each year "Integral Day" - it was on this date in 1675 that Leibniz first introduced the symbol. Lubo reported that St. Bonaventure University has a nice website devoted to this topic.
  11. Dan Jelsovsky reported that approximately 40 students registered for the Florida sectional meeting in February 2006. Ten undergraduate students participated in the integral contest and 2 undergraduate students gave presentations at the meeting. Dan proposed creating more opportunities for student competition at the annual meeting - some ideas are an advanced competition in Real Analysis or Abstract Algebra, a modeling competition, a recreational math competition, etc. The Executive Committee approved a motion to increase the budget for cash incentives to undergraduate students to $125 annually.
  12. Eduardo Fernandez reported on the site selection for the next couple of years.
    • 2007 meeting - February 16/17 at Tallahassee Community College
    • 2008 meeting - February 15/16 at Florida Southern College
    • 2009 meeting - February 13/14 at Florida Gulf Coast University
  13. Joel Berman reported on preliminary plans for the 2007 meeting. He reported that Carl Cowen and James Tanton had already committed as plenary speakers and he asked the Executive Committee for help in identifying another speaker. Joel also reported that he would be building a one hour block of time into the program on Friday afternoon to allow attendees to visit the book publisher displays.
