39th Annual Meeting

Florida Section
The Mathematical Association of America

Stephanie Fitchett

The 2006 Joint Annual Meeting of the Florida Section of the Mathematical Association of America and the Florida Two-Year College Mathematics Association was held at Florida Atlantic University’s Jupiter campus on February 17th and 18th.  The meeting began with a FTYCMA workshop on Friday morning, and the joint program opened Friday afternoon with Underwood Dudley’s delightful and engaging plenary talk on "Formulas for Primes."  A special session on problem solving, as well as a wide variety of contributed talks, ran throughout the afternoon.  Just before the banquet dinner, Steve Dunbar, Director of the American Mathematics Competitions, gave our second plenary talk on "The MAA American Mathematics Competitions:  Easy Problems, Hard Problems, History, and Outcomes."

The banquet dinner included our annual section awards ceremony, where Mike Mears from Manatee Community College received the Distinguished Service Award and Lubo Markov from Barry University received the Distinguished Teaching Award.  Congratulations to Mike and Lubo!

Following the banquet dinner and awards ceremony, Hans-Dietrich Gronau, President of Mathematik-Olympiaden e.V. and German IMO Team Leader, gave an expansive talk on "Mathematical Olympiads - International and National," providing an entertaining and informative way to end a great day.

Saturday’s program continued with more excellent contributed talks, and the student integral contest, with cash prizes for the winners.  Our final plenary speaker, Jim Tanton, got caught in horrible weather in the Boston area and wasn’t able to make it.  So we conned Mike Mears into running a raffle (you may remember the fun we had last year!) to wrap up the morning activities before we headed to the luncheon and business meeting.  Several publishers participated in the book exhibits at the meeting, and thank Addison-Wesley, Key College, McGraw-Hill, Wiley, Houghton-Mifflin and Prentice Hall for their support.

The minutes of the business meeting will be posted, but the big item on the agenda is always the election of new section officers.  Congratulations to:

bulletLubomir Markov, Barry University
President-Elect

bulletEduardo Fernandez, Eckerd College
Vice-President-Elect for Programs

bulletPam Crawford, Jacksonville University
Vice-President-Elect for Site Selection

bulletJohn Waters, Manatee Community College
Secretary-Treasurer (and thanks to John for stepping in for Joe Skala!)

We had over 150 conference participants this year, and we express our appreciation to those who pre-registered.  Thanks to Li Zhou for putting together a fantastic program, to Terje Hoim for handling the local arrangements, and to all of you who gave talks, brought students, and came to support the section activities.  John Waters handled the registration and MAA book sales, Dan Jelsovsky arranged the student integral contest, and David Kerr, Bill Rush, and Scott Hochwald provided a great deal of behind-the-scenes help.  Thanks to all of you!

Please mark your calendars for next year’s meeting, which will be February 16th and 17th at Tallahassee Community College.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Executive Committee Meeting

Florida Section
The Mathematical Association of America

Florida Atlantic University
Jupiter Campus
April 23, 2005

President Steph Fitchett called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM.

In attendance:  Joel Berman, Vice-President-Elect for Programs; Eduardo Fernandez, Vice-President-Elect for Site Selection; Terje Hoim, Local Arrangements Committee; Scott Hochwald, Past President; Daniel Jelsovsky, Coordinator of Student Activities; David Kerr, Governor; Chuck Lindsey, 3rd Past President; Bill Rush, Newsletter Editor; Joe Skala, Secretary-Treasurer; Li Zhou, Vice-President for Programs.

The minutes from the Executive Committee Meeting of February 24, 2005 were approved.

Reports:

  1. Steph Fitchett reported on the regional meetings for 2004-2005.  First Coast and Suncoast held meetings and West Florida is planning a meeting in Fall 2005.

  2. Joe Skala reported on costs associated with the February 2005 sectional meeting at Manatee Community College.  Unfortunately, the section lost money from this meeting.  The cause of the lost was primarily the subsidy of 25 meals for undergraduate students at the banquet and the costs of covering travel expenses for some members of the Executive Committee.  To compensate for this, the section will raise pre-registration fees to $15 and on-site registration fees to $20 for the 2006 meeting.  The Executive Committee also decided that the price for both the banquet and luncheon should cover actual expenses.

Finally, the section will begin asking publishers for a $400 table fee.  Joe reported that 251 people attended the annual meeting at Manatee Community College with 121 pre-registers.  There were 53 MCC students who served as moderators for the contributed papers sessions and as helpers for the conference.

  3. Bill Rush reported that the section web-site continues to evolve.  He passed out a template which establishes the deadlines for the 3 annual issues of the newsletter.

  4. Dan Jelsovsky reported on student activities in the section.  He plans to continue the Student Integral Contest in 2006 with a $50 award to the winner and a $25 award to the runner-up.  He asked members of the Executive Committee to submit problems for the contest.  The Executive Committee endorsed Dan's ideas that student registration continue to be free, that students only pay half price for participation in the banquet or luncheon, and that students who speak at the conference by given a $25 stipend and a free ticket to the banquet.

  5. Li Zhou reported on a preliminary program for the 2006 meeting which would include 3 plenary addresses - Underwood Dudley, James Tanton and Steve Dunbar.  The section will try to coordinate with MAA national on offering some of the MAA publications of these authors at the meeting.

  6. Terje Hoim reported that both the banquet and the luncheon for the 2006 meeting would be in the campus dining hall with approximate costs of $16 for the banquet and $10 for the luncheon.

  7. Scott Hochwald asked for nominations for the 4 positions to be filled next year.

Old Business:

None

New Business:

Steph Fitchett reported that she is going to consult with Martha Goshaw about coordinating a sectional Project Access fellow.

The meeting concluded with a tour of the facilities at Florida Atlantic University - Jupiter Campus.

Rings in Automated Proof

Abstract:  The formalization of mathematics in computer proof systems relies on much rigor for its survival.  One proof system is Isabelle, a proof assistant built on the ML programming language.  Within the framework of Isabelle, ring theory is developed and shown to be consistent with classical ring theory from abstract algebra.

Martin Storm
Stetson Unversity

Foundations for Number Analysis

Abstract:  Recently, a new number-theoretic analogue to the standard calculus derivative was defined in a paper by Linda Westrick.  The number derivative of a positive integer depends on its prime-decomposition.  This paper is a continued study of the number derivative with an emphasis on results mirroring classical calculus.

Student News

The Math and Science Club have put forth and participated in several activities this academic school year.  In the fall semester, the club organized two presentations that were open to students, faculty, and staff of the Clearwater campus.  The first presentation was on the subject of the Red Tide and the effects thereof along the Florida coastline.  The presenter was Dr. Cindy Heil, a senior research scientist of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Institute (FMRI), who is recognized by many as “the state’s top red tide biologist.”  The second presentation was regarding the mathematical field of Operations Research.  Linda Swoy, an adjunct Math Instructor, presented the topic and its application to several students and faculty.  We offered another presentation to students, faculty, and staff this semester by Bill Keller, Professor Emeritus.  His presentation was on the subject of the Electricity, Magnetism, and Light.

In addition to the presentations, the club sponsors the Math Final Review which is offered in both the fall and spring semesters.  The review is offered to students in all math courses and is instructed by many members of the math faculty.  The review is generally offered the last Saturday before the week of finals from 10am to 4pm in the Teaching Auditorium.  Approximately 175 students participated in the event in the fall semester.  This semester, approximately 110 students participated in the review session.

The club also participated in the Beach Bash 2006 Club Challenge, which an annual friendly competition for the active clubs on the Clearwater campus.  The campus clubs participated and competed in several events.  The Math and Science club was ultimately awarded the title of 2006 Club Challenge Winner.

Moreover, the club participated in the 2006 Mathematics Olympics at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville on April 22 from 8am to 4:45pm.  The 2006 Mathematics Olympics is a math competition open to all Florida community colleges.  Unfortunately, the students did not receive any rewards.  However, they did receive an invaluable experience.

Jaclyn Schwanemann received the Burt Mathematics Award.  This award is presented annually to a St. Petersburg/Gibbs student who plans to pursue a career in teaching mathematics.

Amy Cherven and Binal Patel were jointly awarded the Cele Herring Mathematics Scholarship.

Daniel Bueller was awarded the William Ketchum Memorial Mathematics Scholarship.
