This fall, tentatively scheduled for September 9-10, 2005, Mathematics in the Sun will have as its theme College Algebra: Refocused. We will have workshops that use materials that exemplify the Standards of AMATYC, and the MAA’s Recommendations for Courses Below Calculus. The ideas that will be presented in the workshops will model the MAA’s Standards for College Algebra, a document that is currently in creation/revision by CRAFTY. The Retreat will take place on the campus of Central Florida Community College in Ocala.

Student ActivitiesFlorida Section
|
The MAA currently reports 22 student chapters in the Florida Section. This includes 2 universities in Puerto Rico, three two-year colleges in Florida and 16 four-year institutions. One college in Florida, St. Petersburg College, has two chapters, one at each of two different branches. Eight of the eleven public universities in Florida currently have chapters. The Florida Section ranks seventh among the twenty-nine regions in student sections reported.
There is room for improvement on the student chapter front. The largest university in the state of Florida does not have a student section listed on the MAA website. Only eight of the twenty-eight major independent colleges and universities listed at the Florida Department of Education's website currently report having an MAA chapter. Only four of the 28 public community colleges (SPC is still considered a community college by the FDOE, even though it has some four-year degrees) have student chapters. In the future, we will need to work harder to create more chapters.
This year will institute two new programs at our section's annual meeting. First, we have an integral contest for undergraduates, tentatively scheduled for 9:00 - 9:45 am on Saturday. The winner and runner-up of the contest will each receive monetary prizes. Also, we are reinstating a small stipend for any undergraduate student who wishes to give a presentation at the state meeting.
The second annual Embry-Riddle Undergraduate Mathematics Conference will take place Saturday, April 9, 2005 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. Undergraduate students are invited to give talks on any aspect of mathematics, including (but not limited to) research, internships, career planning, problem solving, and contest experiences. A prominent mathematician from the Central Florida region will deliver a keynote speech. The conference is free. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Attendees traveling by automobile will be reimbursed for travel costs. Depending on available funding, attendees may be reimbursed for lodging costs. For more information, or to register to give a talk or attend the conference, see the Web page http://faculty.erau.edu/spradlig/erumc/ERUMC.htm, or contact the Conference Program Director, Greg Spradlin, at spradlig@erau.edu. This conference is an MAA NSF-RUMC sponsored activity funded by NSF grant DMS-0241090 (see http://www.maa.org/ugconf ).
Retirements
Gilbert K. French has retired from Manatee Community College after 15 years. Gil graduated from Yale University with a B.A., from North Adams State College with a M.Ed., and from Bowdin College with a M.A. He was a 2000 NISOD award winner for his excellence in teaching.
Don Gordon and Mary Leesberg will be retiring from Manatee Community College in May 2005.
Other News
Manatee Community College will be hosting the annual FL-MAA/FTYCMA Joint Conference on February 25-26, 2005.
A chapter of Mu Alpha Theta Chapter was established at Manatee Community College.
Faculty
Norma Agras was named to CRAFTY (Curriculum Revision Across the First Two Years) which is a MAA subcommittee of CUPM. She continues to serve on COTP (Committee on the Profession) for MAA and would be glad to share updates on their progress. Professor Agras also is the Director for a project submitted to NSF for funding by MAA - 11 schools around the country were selected to participate in a Refocused College Algebra study.
Other News
At Miami Dade College (MDC) the New Year signifies renewal, resolve, and the third annual Mathematics Retreat (MR)! MR ’05 is scheduled for March 10th and 11th, 2005. This year’s theme is Advancing Student Success: Technology for Faculty and Students/Relating Mathematics to Other Disciplines. Presentations will be made on topics such as implementing mathematics competitions, using various electronic classroom management tools, and incorporating instructional software and hardware.
Also, and of continued interest, will be the implementation of the faculty-driven Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). This is the College’s unique application for continued accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). With its focus on the success and retention of mathematics students, the QEP is a College-wide course of action for institutional improvement on all levels and across disciplines. The agenda for MR ’05 will highlight one of the six QEP goals – mathematics across disciplines. Mathematics faculty College-wide are proud to report that the QEP grew out of the efforts put forth in MR ’04.
For further information concerning MR ’05 and the QEP, please contact Linda Burton at lburton@mdc.edu and Patrick Bibby at pbibby@mdc.edu , respectively.
New Faculty
Cora Wilkerson joins St. Petersburg College as a full-time faculty member on the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus this spring semester. She received her B.S. in Secondary Education from Pennsylvania State University in 1984 and M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from New Mexico State University in 1997. Professor Wilkerson has been with us as an acting full-time and percent-of-load faculty member since the fall of 1999. She also spent the past few years as an adjunct faculty member of both Florida Metropolitan University and Schiller International University. Mrs. Wilkerson was a key person in organizing the 25th Annual Suncoast Regional Meeting held at SPC on December 1, 2000. In her spare time, she tutors for our Student Support Services and offers graphing calculator workshops for our students taking College Algebra and Statistics.
Transitions
Tom Swiersz has left St. Petersburg College at the end of fall semester to take a position in the Department of Mathematics of International College in Fort Meyers. He received his Ph.D. from Florida State University, M.Ed. from University of Illinois, and B.S. from Illinois State University. Dr. Swiersz joined the Department of Mathematics at the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus of St. Petersburg College in the fall of 1989. Although Tom and his family reside in Fort Meyers, he will continue to teach at SPC through our e-Campus. We wish him well on his future adventures.

He was also appointed as an editor for MERLOT's new journal, The Journal for Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT). The first issue is scheduled for release this Spring.
Manoug Manougian won the 2003/2004 USF Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award, on October 27, 2004, presented by President Judy Genshaft and Provost Renu Khator.
Vilmos Totik gave invited talks at the 4th International Congress of the European Mathematical Society, in Stockholm, Sweden; at the 5th Encuentro Internacional de Approximación de la Universidad de Jaen, in Ubeda, Spain; and at the 5th International Conference on Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory, in Maratea, Italy.
Cliff C. Morris, Jr., Dean of Mathematics at the west campus of Valencia Community College, is retiring this year, effective May 31, 2005 after 30 years at the college. Dr. Morris began as a professor of Mathematics September 3, 1975 and became chair of Mathematics in July of 1991.
